Careers

Mathematics majors are highly recruited on college campuses. Identifying one of three career tracks typically followed by Mathematics majors can help you make specific plans. You can get information about most careers at the University Career Services Department

Teaching

Mathematics teachers at the middle school and secondary levels are in high need in Texas.

  • Contact Dr. George Tintera of the Mathematics Department for more information about degree plans, extra-curricular possiblities and professional development leading to a successful teaching career.
  • Contact O.B. Garcia (Teacher Recruitment Coordinator) or Jill Allen (Monarch Program Assistant) about scholarship$ and loan forgivene$$ programs for future math teachers.

Graduate School

Further study of mathematics can lead to more employment opportunities, research work and college level teaching. Let your faculty mentor know early if you are interested in going on to graduate school.

Things to keep in mind are

  • Graduate school admissions depends on grades in upper division courses. Hard work in those courses does pay off, and
  • Your Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score will be used as an admission criteria for graduate school. Find out early what the GRE is and how you can prepare to do your best on that exam.
